Newport (eng. Newport) is a city located on the shore of Bristol Bay, near the mouth of the river USK. This city its size, is the third among the cities of Wales, usta only Cardiff and Swansea. The city’s population is estimated at approximately 140.000 people. The main area of the city located in the lowlands, however, some areas are more hilly terrain. A large part of the city, mainly South, located on the spot where once were swamps. Standing on one of the hills called “Ridgeway”, you can get a great view of the entire city, in particular its excellent architecture combining medieval style of the UK property and trends of the twenty-first century.
Newport is located in the southern part of Wales and its weather is largely due to the warm currents of air formed by the Gulf stream. Newport and according to meteorologists it is considered one of the warmest and sunniest cities not only Wales but the whole of the UK. The first human settlements on the territory of modern Newport was founded on these fertile lands by tribes of farmers and fishermen in the bronze age. Subsequently, these lands were inhabited by a warlike tribe of Siluro having Celtic roots. In the first century of our era these, and many other lands of the island of Britain was occupied by Roman troops, founded there a Fort called Caerleon. The garrison of this fortress more than two centuries held an important part, including the crossing of the river USK. Also the exclusivity of this Roman Fort was that it was the farthest Outpost of the Romans in Britain.
Local legend has it that the first Church on these grounds was founded in the fifth century by the Holy Quinlivan and was called the Church of SV. Volosa. In the future, this castle was repeatedly rebuilt, eventually becoming a Newport Cathedral, the place, the seat of the Bishop of Monmouth. Later, during the Norman expansion in the place of what is now Newport, the castle was founded. The construction of the Newport Castle was completed at the end of the eleventh century. The first written mention of the fact that this place is a settlement, refers to the 1126-th year. These documents specify the name of Robert Fitzhamon as the founder of this settlement, located in the vicinity of the castle. It was also built many structures and buildings designed in typical for houses in England and Wales at that time style. In the center of modern Newport are the ruins belonging to the XII-th century, which most likely was the initial settlement. They were found only in 1840. XIV-th century marked the heyday of the settlement as well as obtaining two charters, first, in the beginning, and then at the end of the century.

The beginning of the new century brought destruction to the face of the forces of Oina of Glendora, seized all the surrounding land. However after twenty years the city has recovered and received a third Charter, establishing the right for Newport to conduct extensive trade with all the surrounding cities. The city has many artisans, ranging from butchers and bakers, ending with the tanners and soap manufacturers. In the XVI-th century the city had even a small but fairly well-developed harbour, taking many ships. There are records of the time indicating that Newport was one of the best houses in England and Wales, designed for visiting the city of merchants. The industrial revolution brought the city new opportunities for growth that Newport was not slow to take advantage. Rich deposits of coal and metals, found nearby, made the city one of the leading exporters of coal and iron all over Wales. In the second half of XIX-th century the city attracted many immigrants from Ireland and England that has greatly changed the social life of the city. And disputed geographical position of the County, which is located in Newport, raised many questions, and the Welsh, whether it is city or still English. The late nineteenth and the entire twentieth century became for the city a time of constant development and prosperity. The sharp rise in population, obtaining the status of the city-County, rapid construction, scale comparable only with the construction of homes in London and other major cities of the United Kingdom, not only in housing but also in expanding the city’s port. While a significant proportion of the city’s economy has held production, which was conducted on foundry and mechanical plants, located in Newport. Having survived the Second World War, the city again flourished, this time due to the improved transport system of the city that made Newport a leader in terms of transport across the country. At the moment, this city is one of the largest centres of metallurgical industry in the UK. Also developed the production of paper and technology. No less important is Newport as a port.

The official status of Newport received only in 2002 year. This year was remarkable in other ways. In particular, construction began on the Arts centre and Theatre, which had found a valuable archaeological find, namely the world’s oldest ship of this type. Experts believe that it was built back in the mid-fifteenth century. As already noted, the city is rich in the remains of buildings belonging to different epochs, in particular there are buildings that served as the baths and the barracks at the time of the Romans. This is one of the few such houses in England and across the UK that have survived to the present day. The history of Roman expansion is devoted to several museums, particularly the Museum of the Roman Legions. On the numerous festivals take place the battles of those times, renovated by local history buffs. Considerable historical and architectural value is the mansion of the time of James the Second, Tredegar House. This majestic building, built in the XV century, shows us typical of the time arhitekturnyy the style of the UK property owned by the upper class.
