Across the UK 47% of people, owners of their own apartments and houses, take up more space than they need. This is a new study by real estate Agency Strutt & Parker, called “the Future of residential property” .
According to the study, the extra space is at 63% of people living in the East Midlands , 60% of people living in Scotland, 59 % of people living in Wales, and 58% of people living in the Orkney Islands in Scotland.

But in large cities the number of unnecessary space in dwellings is extremely small. So, in Glasgow there are only 19% of extra space in their homes. Especially the lack of extra space is felt in London. In the district of London city, the level of excess space of only 13 %, followed by also populous, tower Hamlets, With the level of excess space – 17%. Further Westminster – with 24% and Hackney 25 %.
As evidenced by numerous studies of the real estate market, the main problem in the housing market is the lack of a sufficient number of new properties that came on the market. However, if all surplus residential property came on the market, it would greatly fix the problem of housing affordability which is so important nowadays in the UK.
The main task of the construction industry – to solve problems individually, gradually releasing untapped housing and at the same time building new facilities.
However, for many, to have two houses – a vital necessity. Some people have an apartment in the city and a country house where they go on holiday. In this case, a simple living area is inevitable. In some families, adult children have their homes , but coming home for the weekend. In this case, also require additional living space. If you believe the study, by 2033 41% of the housing will occupy one person. Due to the aging of the population – 3,8 million people in the UK now live alone. Among them, 70 percent are women.
