During his election campaign the conservative party in the UK promised his constituents to make the housing problem a priority. The construction of new houses and apartments in the UK task # 1 in the program of each party, only the methods of solving this problem were proposed. And now that the tories have received a mandate of confidence from the British, campaign promises need to be translated into concrete action. As stated by Prime Minister David Cameron, in order to meet the needs of the British people in housing, the nation needs 1 million new houses by 2020.

Meanwhile, the Association of town and country Planning in the UK expresses concern that such a pursuit of quantity in the construction of new homes in the UK can be sacrificed for quality.

According to the plan of the government, it is planned to introduce a so-called “spatial planning in the American style”, when the new construction land will be allocated in remote deserted areas and local authorities will be deprived of the ability to control the process and quality of construction. In the absence of careful planning by local authorities, chaotically constructed new facilities can increase the pressure on such important public facilities as roads, schools and hospitals.

The Association has criticized the new rules for the conversion of commercial properties into residential without any permission. These innovations can lead to the fact that residential properties will lack enough space for children to play, lack of sufficient Parking space and will definitely need more schools , hospitals and other social infrastructure in the area of such objects.

According to the Executive Director of the Association of town and country Planning in the UK, Kate Henderson, as new housing should not suffer as a result of the pursuit of quantity . Local authorities should be able to ensure quality control at all stages of planning and construction. “We must build a smart city with a developed infrastructure, a focus on environmental standards and health and safety for all people,” concluded Henderson.
