Bristol is a city, an administrative unit in the ceremonial County in South West England with an estimated population as of 2009 – 433100 man and surrounded by fairly large branistea area of the smaller towns, the total number of which in 2007 amounted to more than 1 million people. It is the sixth largest city of England and eighth most populated city of the United Kingdom. The most populous city in South West England.
Historically divided between the counties Gloustershire and Somerset, the city received a Royal Charter in 1155 and was awarded County status in 1373. Since the 13th century in five hundred years, Bristol became the top three cities in England after London, standing on a par with York and Norwich, until in the 18th century began the rapid rise of Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham in the industrial revolution. Bristol is located in the North-West from the famous for its ancient history the city of bath and South Gloucester. The city is built along the river Avon , it has a short coastline along the mouth of the river Severn flowing into the Bristol channel.
Bristol is the largest centre of culture, employment and education in the region. Its prosperity has long been due to the proximity of the sea. Initially, the city’s industry was centered around its seaport. In recent years, the economy of the town was moving forward in connection with the development of media, electronics and aerospace industry.
Residents of Bristol are traditionally called bristolians.
As one of the largest seaports, the city of Bristol has a long history of trading commodities, originally wool cloth exports and imports of fish, wine, grain and dairy products later tobacco, tropical fruits and plantation goods; major imports now are motor vehicles, grain, timber, fresh produce and petroleum products.

The style of architecture of the city has about 51 buildings of Class I, and 3800 buildings of Class II, in which mixed a variety of architectural styles ranging from the middle ages to the 21st century. In the mid-19th century, the Bristol survived the era of the Byzantine influence on architecture and the city acquired unique features, some specimens of which have survived to the present day. The architecture of all the most brilliant periods in the history of the United Kingdom is found in the city of Bristol across the city. The surviving elements of the city’s fortifications, medieval castles and churches Dating from the 12th century are found everywhere.
