Derby is located in the heart of England, namely, in Derbyshire. Derby has a long history that goes back more than two thousand years. The first buildings that formed over time a small settlement, which was called Derventio, appeared in the beginning of the first century. Later there were built three Roman Fort, located at the intersection of five major roads built by the Romans. In those days these lands inhabitants were engaged in manufacturing, mainly products of iron or clay. Already in the third century the city was surrounded by a stone wall, which replaced standing before a stockade. During the rule of the Romans, the city developed and had an important economic significance for the entire region, as was the center of trade. However, after the Roman garrisons left the city, trade, and other aspects of urban life asleep, and the city almost depopulated. Now on the site of this settlement can still be found the remains of a typical characteristic of the Romans built houses in England. You can also find some remains of the heating system and two wells. Life on land that later became the city of Derby, almost froze for two whole centuries. The new birth of the city was already in the era of the Anglo-Saxon rule. The new owners of these lands gave the city the name little Chester, and also formed two other settlements, one of which surrounded the Church of the Holy Werburga. Anglo-Saxon rule lasted three centuries, until these areas have not joined the invaders from Denmark conquered all the surrounding land. However, this has not stopped the development of the city, on the contrary, the development of the city led to the fact that at the end of IX-th century the population was about 1,200 people.

 

Later, Derby got the official right to be the center of the province, received the rank of Burgh Danelagh. At the end of XVIII-th century the city held the annual races, and one of the first events in the relentless struggle won Bridget – horse, belonging to the Lord Derby. In the future, particularly with the development of mechanical engineering, the city continued to grow with production volumes. For example, to the middle of the XIX-th century the city was already thirty-five silk factories. This contributed to the increase in population, which at that time reached 37,000 people. Due to the fact that Derby was in the lead in terms of construction of residential houses in England, growing city faced with the typical problems of a housing shortage and overpopulation.
